The Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education have executed the pilot scheme of the project Cultural Experience Education since 2017, expecting to guide those who work in the art and culture sector to exploit the potential cultural experiences and thus make the students learn about art and culture through extracurricular activities as well as the related courses systematically. In addition to the experience activities in galleries, museums, cultural centers and theatres, the participation of the professional team, which specialize in the fields of dancing, music, performing, literature, cultural heritage and calligraphy, is also included in this project, letting the students be familiar with art and culture, and furthermore look at the world in different perspectives through the lessons and the immersion of art.

Cheng Li-chiun, the head of the Ministry of Culture has announced that the following goals would be involved in the cultural policy, and should be listed as the priority tasks: the preservation of culture and history, the promotion of experience and education, the foundation establishment of art and education, and the sufficient support for local culture. The project Cultural Experience Education aims to make the cultural resources be part of the courses of formal education, so that the students are allowed to appreciate art in a unique and sensitive way, as Cheng Li-chiun has said: “We’d like to design an experience project especially for children, enabling them to familiarize themselves with art creation and appreciation.”

The idea that Cheng Li-chiun advocates is to know the world and in the meantime know oneself much better through multiple forms of art. The students could discuss and collaborate with one another, building up and practicing their capability of aesthetic judgment in their life via the involvement in the art activities.

Subordinate to the Ministry of Culture, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) has been assigned to promote the education of cultural experience. Unlike other affiliated units, NTMoFA has implemented Museum-School Collaboration Project of NTMoFA Art Workshop since 2013, carrying out the interdisciplinary art activities, scheming strategic drama classes themed with the museum, and cultivating the faculty for the assistance to the museum guide. Coincidentally, the concept of Museum-School Collaboration Project of NTMoFA Art Workshop corresponds to the one of the project Cultural Experience Education.

After examining the service of museum guide and setting the goals of improving audience’s sensitivity as well as their self-awareness, NTMoFA decided to combine drama and education to implement the project. By the interdisciplinary “Dramatic Interpretation,” which is distinct from the traditional way of museum guide, the professional knowledge of art could be transformed, leading the audience to understand the context and the meaning of the artworks.

National Taichung Theater, which inaugurated in 2016, teamed up with domestic and foreign artists or art groups to scheme comprehensive education promotion activities in 2017, such as participatory workshops, lectures on in-depth analysis of programs, face-to-face with artists and salons of particular subjects. All of those plans and activities help create the artistic environment, where the idea “theatre is learning; learning is in theatre” is carried through.

National Museum of Taiwan History executed Experimental Project of Museum Education in 2008, joining together with the Department of Drama Creation and Application, National University of Tainan to unite the concept of theatre and museum. The plan contains the major theatre production “Interactive Theatre,” available learning resources for curriculum and those who in need “Museum Resource Boxes,” and the combination of permanent exhibitions and situational performance “Dramatic Interpretation.” From 2014, the dramatic performance has played the most important role in Experimental Project of Museum Education, extending to the diverse demonstration of the history education; since 2017 to date, aside from the existing application of drama to the educational system, the target group of the service “Dramatic Interpretation” has included children and museum volunteers.

The six articles of the column “Features” in this issue would introduce the project Cultural Experience Education in the aspects of fine arts and drama, along with the effectiveness of the educational integration of galleries, museums and theatres.
